Thirsty Suitors – emotional combat that’s equal parts funny, horny and heartfelt

J

Ala must confront the consequences of her actions. Following her recent breakup, she becomes aware of the harm she has caused in her past relationships, ranging from being uncommitted to potentially cruel. She decides to return to her hometown of Timber Hills in hopes of making things right, but it proves to be a difficult task. Upon entering the local diner, she encounters her former middle school flame, Sergio, who challenges her to a fight in an attempt to win her back.

The game Thirsty Suitors accurately reflects its title. Throughout the gameplay, Jala, a 20-something second-generation Indian immigrant, confronts her ex-partners who are still longing for her. Rather than traditional communication, Jala’s battles serve as a means for honest emotional discussions. This adventure presents thought-provoking themes within the context of comical conflicts.

The combat system is based on turns. In order to attack or defend, the player must successfully complete a timed button press. The ultimate goal is to manipulate the opponent’s emotions and put them in a vulnerable state. As the battle progresses, Jala and her opponent engage in conversation, using both their words and physical abilities to express their feelings. It can be difficult to determine what will affect an enemy, but observing their reactions to certain actions can give an indication of their weaknesses. For instance, Sergio is known for his strong desire, so Jala uses her seductive attack, lying provocatively on the ground while the player rapidly presses a button to make her eyelashes flutter.

Jala delivers a stunning revelation in a surprise attack, and it is possible to call upon a friend for assistance – such as Jala’s mother, who will use the classic finishing move of many South Asian mothers: a slap with her slipper. These battles can become lengthy and monotonous, as you may find yourself using the same attacks repeatedly. While this style of fighting adds an intriguing aspect to arguments, it can also feel repetitive.

When not engaged in combat, you are riding on four wheels. Jala uses her skateboard to travel everywhere, and skating plays a significant role in the game, including optional trick challenges. The story includes a group of local skateboarders who have created a cult centered around a man in a bear suit.

Although Thirsty Suitors may seem lighthearted, it effectively explores various complex themes with sincerity and understanding. It addresses issues such as migration from rural areas, coming to terms with one’s queerness, and the unique struggles faced by South Asian immigrants, without feeling forced. The central dilemma of the game is relatable to many: we all make mistakes while trying to discover ourselves, and it often takes hindsight to learn from them. Most of us have experienced at least one relationship that we cannot comprehend now, whether romantic or not, and the fear of disappointing our loved ones or society can be daunting to overcome.

However, appreciating Thirsty Suitors means embracing all of its anime-inspired oddities. The pacing itself follows a traditional episodic structure, with each day beginning and ending in the same manner, which may feel limiting for some players. Yet, the whimsical elements, such as battling talking animals, delving into an ex-partner’s subconscious, and a mini-game involving martial arts-inspired cooking, captivate the audience. This game is a feast for the senses, from well-crafted characters to stunning art design, and a soundtrack that blends hip-hop and Asian influences. Thirsty Suitors may be a very different take on a south Asian immigrant story, but it’s made with so much style and fun you can’t help but love it.
