Danny Cipriani, a former fly-half for the England rugby team, has announced that he is retiring from the sport.

Danny Cipriani has officially ended his career as a professional rugby player, describing it as a “humbling yet liberating experience”.

Cipriani, who won 16 England caps in his career, had not played since 2022 and was “semi-retired”. But the 36-year-old has now officially called time on a colourful career that included two spells at Wasps as well as stints at Melbourne Rebels, Sale, Gloucester and Bath.

“Although I have been partially retired, I am now making my official announcement,” stated Cipriani on X. “Even though I haven’t played in some time, I have kept the possibility open in my mind. However, while sitting outside Costa and messaging my agent, I came to the realization that I do not have a desire to play again. It was a sobering moment, but also one of liberation.”

In 2008, Cipriani made his debut for England and his final game was in 2018 against South Africa. While his natural talent was undeniable, he faced numerous off-field issues throughout his career.

Cipriani expressed gratitude to all the coaches he has had, stating that he has learned valuable lessons from each one of them.

“All the staff at every club who are always the greatest mix of personalities, thank you for often being the heartbeat of the club. To the supporters who turned up and wore their heart on their sleeves, thank you for showing love throughout my career, special memories from all the fans of each team I played at.

“I want to express my appreciation to all of my former teammates. Playing alongside them was such a joy, even though I may have been intense at times. We also shared some great memories on the field. Looking back, I am grateful for the countless lessons I learned throughout my career.”
