The best writing on racism since Baldwin is by Younge.

The piece by Gary Younge discusses the widespread hypocrisy surrounding racism present in both of the leading political parties. It is a brutally honest and scathing essay, reminiscent of James Baldwin’s writing (published as “In Britain’s degraded politics, fighting racism has become a cynical game” on 15 March). It deserves to be prominently displayed in the offices of journalists and politicians across the country.

The propulsion of rockets is described as due to “flames and hot gases, which push against the ground and cause it to travel upwards” (The kids quiz, 9 March). Apart from the grammatical failure, which has the ground moving upwards, what happened to Newton’s laws? Have they been discarded as the work of a dead white male?

Further to Dr Helen Care’s rhapsodic endorsement (Letters, 6 March) of Polly Toynbee’s clarion call to bring joy back to the education system (The Tories have sucked the joy from the education system. Here are three ways Labour can bring it back, 29 February), might I suggest a touch of nominative determinism? Why not colleges of fervour education?

Last Saturday’s edition of The Guardian Sport had only 16 pages, not leaving enough room to acknowledge Salford’s first victory against St Helens in their past 41 meetings dating back to 1980. Maybe a letter about this could be included in a future issue.
