After a decade, Attica Zoological Park has celebrated the birth of a baby pygmy hippo. The zoo’s employees expressed their joy as breeding attempts for the species were difficult due to the limited number of male pygmy hippos in captivity. The male calf, a rarity, was welcomed on 19 February and now joins his parents Lizzie and Jamal as the only pygmy hippos residing in the zoo. Pygmy hippos, native to western Africa, are classified as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
