The BBC has acknowledged that an increase in expenses may result in them losing the broadcasting rights for the Six Nations rugby tournament. A video discussing this issue is available.

The BBC’s outgoing sports director, Barbara Slater, informed members of the Digital, Media and Sport select committee that rising broadcast rights costs and a decrease in income may force the network to relinquish its share of the Six Nations. Slater explained that tough decisions will need to be made as sports rights have increased significantly in the last decade, while the BBC’s income has decreased by 30% in real terms.
