Best batter beaten by bowling contraption designed by Dr John Venn | Brief letters

It wasn’t just any Australian batter who was bowled out by John Venn’s machine (Wooden bowling arm that bested Australian cricketer in 1909 rebuilt, 10 June) but Victor Trumper, the world’s most famous batter at that time. Trumper’s first Test had been WG Grace’s last, at the end of which Grace had presented the Australian with his bat and anointed him with the words: “From the present champion to the future champion.”

Yes, Mishal Husain “twice picked up Penny Mordaunt on her use of the statistic”, but Mordaunt ignored her, spoke over her and mentioned the Tories’ £2,000 tax claim several more times. She should have been sent off (Labour and Tories renew clashes in ill-tempered second election debate, 7 June).

To avoid the unedifying sight of politicians trying to prove who can shout the loudest and denying other speakers the right of reply, would it not be better if the moderator had control over their microphones, only allowing them to talk when it’s their turn or a question has been directed to them?
