TV tonight: Suranne Jones’s first documentary is all about witches

Suranne Jones: Investigating Witch Trials

9pm, Channel 4

Suranne Jones is obsessed with the 17th-century witch trials that took place near her Greater Manchester home town, and is clearly moved as she follows in their footsteps to learn the wider history of witches (or rather, women) in this two-parter. From accusations of keeping nests of penises in trees to having orgies with the devil, there are some wild moments on the witchy curriculum – and a scene in which Jones howls with witchy musician Bat for Lashes is exhilarating. She broke the record for winning the most Brit awards in one night, and now she’s on an ITV highlights package! Raye stars in this compilation of performances from Wembley Stadium with a highly chart-focused lineup. Sugababes, Sabrina Carpenter, David Guetta and Meghan Trainor also take to the stage. The RSPCA is celebrating its 200th birthday and the Rev Kate Bottley heads to an animal hospital in Birmingham to learn its remarkable story. She also meets deaf teenager Zach, who believes his hearing dog Echo is a gift from heaven, and the day’s hymns of course include All Things Bright and Beautiful. HR

Anchorman Joe Crowley heads to the Norfolk Broads to witness the Three Rivers Race, a demanding inland sailing contest where boats must navigate 50 miles of narrow waterways in just 24 hours. In this idyllic wander around one of the UK’s most beautiful corners, it’s time for Yell’s annual show. The islanders are preparing to show off, among other things, bespoke furniture and massive pumpkins.
