This week, Ammar Kalia selects five of the top podcasts about the supernatural, covering personal experiences with the paranormal to the beginnings of tarot meanings.

Occult Confessions

The concept of the occult is difficult to define. It involves elements of our world that are not easily explained, such as magic, mysticism, and paranormal phenomena. This field of study is niche and complex, and has been interpreted in various ways by occultists and devotees. In this comprehensive series, host Rob C Thompson delves into different theories surrounding unusual occurrences. With a conversational and engaging approach, Thompson explores topics like Rasputin’s supposed magic, the history of witch-hunts, and the concept of parallel universes.

The Battersea Poltergeist
Ghost stories are a cornerstone of the occult and you’ll be hard pressed to find any as suspenseful and dramatically satisfying as this 2021 series from the writer of West End hit 2:22 A Ghost Story, Danny Robbins. We hear how the discovery of a mystery key in 1956 led 15-year-old Shirley Hitchings of No 63 Wycliffe Road in Battersea, London, to become a focal point of national interest and the subject of a paranormal investigation. Robbins’s other series Uncanny and Witch Hunt also carry on a similar theme, exploring first-hand paranormal encounters and the haunting of a rural Welsh house.

Weird Studies

The series by academic Phil Ford and writer JF Martel is a diverse collection of discussions that are often unconventionally told. While some may find their episodes to be rambling and pretentious, they cover a wide range of topics such as art, culture, social criticism, and philosophy. Their enthusiastic approach is particularly fitting when it comes to exploring the occult, offering new perspectives on subjects like the origins of tarot symbols, Carl Jung’s thoughts on UFOs, and the concept of mystery. It is a deep dive for those who are interested in delving deeper into the world of the occult.

Ghost of a Podcast

The realm of the occult is divided into two sides – the dark side, which is inhabited by poltergeists and hauntings, and the lighter side, which is filled with the mysticism of astrology. While some may dismiss astrology as a hodgepodge of made-up ideas based on fictional zodiac signs, Jessica Lanyadoo takes it very seriously. Drawing on her 20 years of experience as a medium and astrologer, Lanyadoo’s weekly podcast offers in-depth analysis of listeners’ horoscopes for the upcoming week. For those interested in applying astrology to the larger world, David Odyssey’s podcast, The Luminaries, is a must-listen. With enthusiasm, Odyssey explores how the alignment of the stars may have played a role in historical events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Unexplained

This well-liked show by Richard Maclean Smith, now in its seventh season, uses captivating sound design and skilled storytelling to delve into true tales of supernatural enigmas. Instead of providing logical explanations, Smith embraces the uncertainty and leaves it up to the audience to decide on the occult interpretations behind phenomena such as ghostly British roads, enigmatic Amazonian tribes, and telekinetic French children. Without the input of experts or firsthand accounts, Smith’s monologue-style narratives are gripping works of audio drama that straddle the realms of horror and mysticism. It is advisable to refrain from listening before going to sleep.
