The one who provided the voice for the characters of Max Payne and Alan Wake in video games, James McCaffrey, passes away at the age of 65.

The actor who voiced the main character in the Max Payne video games, James McCaffrey, has passed away at the age of 65.

The actor, Rochelle Boström’s husband, passed away on Sunday at their residence in Larchmont, New York after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer.

Before gaining recognition for his work as a voice actor in video games, McCaffrey had an extensive career in film and television spanning several decades. He rose to prominence with his role in the police drama New York Undercover, and also made appearances in various other shows such as Swift Justice, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Law and Order: SVU, Viper, Sex and the City, As the World Turns, Madam Secretary, Jessica Jones, She’s Gotta Have It, Revenge, and Blue Bloods.

He had minor parts in movies such as The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Nick and Jane, and American Splendour during his time as an actor.

According to McCaffrey, his preferred character was in Rescue Me as Jimmy Keefe, a New York firefighter who passed away during the 9/11 tragedy. Throughout all seven seasons of the show, Jimmy’s spirit continues to haunt the main character played by Denis Leary.

During a 2020 interview, McCaffrey shared that a friend and their sibling, who lived two houses down from McCaffrey during high school, were both present in the towers on September 11th. One brother was able to escape, while the other did not. McCaffrey also mentioned that he has a few friends in the fire department and every year on September 11th, he visits Ground Zero with another friend who is an actor and lost their best friend in the South Tower.

However, he was most famously recognized as the voice of Max Payne, a former New York City police officer turned Drug Enforcement Administration agent seeking justice for his wife and daughter’s death. McCaffrey voiced the character in all three installments of the Max Payne video game series, which were published in 2001, 2003, and 2012. Mark Wahlberg portrayed the role in the 2008 film adaptation, where McCaffrey also made a brief appearance.

In an interview, he stated that he has never been a fan of video games. He mentioned his experience working on Max Payne, where he spent six hours a day in a sound booth and recorded about 400 pages of script. However, he has never watched or played the game and does not have any interest in it. He admits that he does not fully appreciate video games.

However, he also lent his voice to the character of Thomas Zane in the 2010 video game Alan Wake, and later portrayed Alex Casey in the anticipated 2023 follow-up, Alan Wake 2. In this role, he plays an FBI agent who becomes invested in the main character. Additionally, he has contributed his voice to other games such as Area 51 and Alone in the Dark.

His wife and daughter are the ones he leaves behind.
