Toto Wolff has renewed his contract with Mercedes and is confident that Hamilton has the potential to win back the F1 championship.

Toto Wolff, the principal of the Mercedes team, has put an end to rumors about his future by confirming that he has signed a new contract to continue leading the team for another three years. He also restated his confidence in Lewis Hamilton’s ability to secure an eighth world championship title during this time.

In 2013, the 52-year-old became a member of Mercedes, coinciding with Hamilton’s arrival. Together, they achieved great success, with Mercedes winning eight consecutive constructors’ championships from 2014 to 2021 and Hamilton securing six drivers’ titles. Currently, Wolff is a co-owner of the team, with a one-third stake alongside Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos group and Mercedes.

The team has faced difficulties with a car that is not competitive over the last two years, being consistently outperformed by Max Verstappen and the dominant Red Bull team. Despite this, Wolff expressed a strong determination to return to the top and has committed to remaining as team principal for the next three seasons, which will include a major rule change in 2026.

He stated, “I am in a positive state. The possibility of me experiencing bore-out is always greater than burnout.” He then added, “That is why I welcome the challenges we face today, even though they may seem daunting to handle at times.”

“As a stakeholder, my ultimate goal is to maximize my return on investment, which is achieved through success. I will not hold onto a position if I believe someone else can outperform me. I surround myself with individuals who can provide different perspectives. Ultimately, our collective decision was to move forward once more.”

Hamilton, currently 39 years old, has not achieved a victory since the conclusion of the 2021 season, making it the longest period without a win in his career. However, team principal Wolff is confident that Hamilton is still performing at his best as they approach the upcoming season, scheduled to begin in Bahrain on March 2nd. He believes that Mercedes has the capability to close the gap with Red Bull and if they provide Hamilton with a car that he can trust and feel comfortable driving, he will have the necessary skills to win the championship. “At 39 years old, age is not a barrier,” he stated.

“Maintain a positive mindset and believe that anything is possible. It’s important not to begin the season with a negative attitude, thinking that something cannot be achieved. As evidenced by McLaren’s success last year, even a single upgrade can make a significant difference. We have committed to a two-year contract with Lewis and we owe it to him, George Russell, and the entire team to devote our full focus to the 2024 and 2025 seasons. I believe it is achievable.”
